From one business owner to another

It’s the best move you’ll ever make!

Deciding to take the plunge and start your own business is a huge step in your life, and can be the best move you’ve ever made. While you may have heard horror stories of things going wrong in business; let’s focus on what can go right. With a solid foundation and a strong plan, your business can succeed.

Here are 5 reasons why you would want to take the step to become a business owner:

  1. Independence:
Working for yourself simply means you are not working to make someone else rich! All your hard work is rewarded by the fact that what you are putting the effort into is something that is yours.
  2. Flexibility:
Forgo the traditional nine to five! If you want to start later, you can. Want to take your laptop and work at the beach? Nobody is going to stop you. You are the boss, so your time is now more flexible.
  3. Personal fulfilment:
Owning and running your own business is so much more satisfying than working for someone else. Suddenly you are working on something that you truly care about; and you get to enjoy the pride of watching something that you started, grow into something magnificent.
  4. Money:
While it’s tough initially, eventually you will be earning more than what you would as an employee. Hard work is eventually rewarded, and by successfully launching and running your own business, you will get to see the financial rewards.
  5. Ability to help others:
While this may not be a reason to start a business, take it into consideration. You can one day pass on your knowledge to another new business owner. You can employ a younger person who is starting out in their career and help them build their skills. You can decide whether your business supports a cause. These things will all lead to a greater sense of achievement and satisfaction.

A word from a business owner

Catherine began her business when she was in her early 40s. As a mum of two young children, she was looking for more flexibility in her working life, and the ability to tailor her workload around her family life. Using digital marketing strategies developed throughout her career, plus those from the commerce Degree, she launched her business, and has never looked back!

“I did a Commerce Degree at Curtin University and spent a lot of my working life in sales and marketing.”

“I always loved what I did, but the hours were long, and different roles came with different frustrations. When my children came along, I knew I needed to make a change that suited our family,” Catherine said.

“I will never regret starting my marketing business. I love working for myself and being able to work from home, to be able to still be there for my kids, and have the flexibility of catching up on work and meetings when it suited me.”

“My client base is ever-growing and I have been able to take on a contractor to help with the workload.”

“I don’t think I could go back to working for an employer now. I know what I am capable of and it’s so exciting and rewarding when I see how far my business has come along in the four years I have been operating, and I can’t wait to see where I can take it in the future” Catherine said.
