If you like the idea of helping people every day and making a genuine difference to young people’s lives, Youth Work might be the most rewarding career move you ever make.

Youth workers support young people by developing and delivering programs around social, behavioural, developmental, protection and welfare needs.

A day in the life of a youth worker is never dull, whether you’re running hands-on Youth Centre programs or out in the community.

So what does it take to get started?

What qualifications do I need?

The first thing you’ll need is a CHC50413 Diploma of Youth Work which can springboard you to further specialised study or kick-start your career.

Completing a CHC50413 Diploma of Youth Work in Perth will give you the skills to be an inspiring mentor, deliver youth programs, and organise activities and events for young people.

Once you’ve had a taste of the variety of work you might want to consider further learning, like:

· CHC53215 Diploma of Alcohol and Other Drugs

· CHC53315 Diploma of Mental Health

· CHC32015 Certificate III in Community Services

· CHC43315 Certificate IV in Mental Health

As you become more qualified your career will progress at a rapid rate.

What kind of people thrive in Youth Work?

Working with young people is challenging in the best ways. You will always be helping to solve problems and build the next generation, whether through direct contact or running an inspiring program.

To excel in Youth Work you need to be:

·         Good with people

·         Patient and empathetic

·         Non-judgemental

·         Energetic with a good sense of humour

·         Organised and a good leader

If that sounds like you – or if you want to develop those skills – then a CHC50413 Diploma of Youth Work might be for you.

Can I work without qualifications?

We always encourage people to try out volunteering in youth work to see if they like it.

From there a CHC50413 Diploma in Youth Work or CHC32015 Certificate III in Community Services will enable you to take the next step up.

Contact your local youth centre to find out what volunteer opportunities are available.
