There’s been a lot of news recently about good hygiene. Not sure about you, but we’ve never been more conscious of hand washing, face touching or hand shaking.
Thankfully there are already great hygiene practices in most beauty salons, and in the make-up industry in general. It’s something our professional make-up trainers believe in wholeheartedly (and teach really well).
Although we never thought hygiene would become one of the most important things you learn in a Diploma of Screen and Media!
Why hygiene matters in make-up
Have you ever gone to a make-up tutorial and wondered how many faces those brushes touched before yours? Chances are, if the teacher is following hygiene standards (like this NSW Government fact sheet) then all the equipment has been properly cleaned – don’t stress!
Rules and regulations exist to keep clients safe. Whether you’re transforming people into fantastic characters with extravagant special effects make-up, styling hair for performances, touching up make-up on a movie set or collaborating with other creatives, you’re going to be in close contact with lots of people.
If you’re sick and they catch it, it could be curtains on that production. If they’re carrying something and you catch it, the production grinds to a halt (and you’re out of work) while they try to replace you.
How to learn make-up hygiene
Our Diploma of Screen and Media actually starts with a unit on safe practice.
From then on, our experienced trainers teach you how to develop and hone good hygiene practices. Both for the rest of your 1-year Diploma, and throughout your long and varied career.
Pretty soon you’ll be the expert giving make-up tutorials to budding beauty experts. And when that happens, you’ll want to set a good example by preaching health and hygiene. Not just because the media says you should, but because you know first-hand how important it is to keep clients, make-up artists, crew and other creatives healthy.
