VET FEE-HELP courses – what’s changed?

Category: Career Development
On 1 January 2017, the Australian Government replaced its VET FEE-HELP scheme with the VET Student Loans (VSL) program.
The VSL program aims to offer greater protection for students and focusses on courses that address industry needs, opening up better employment opportunities. The main difference between the VET FEE-HELP and VSL programs is eligibility for government funding.
Under the VET FEE-HELP program, over 800 VET courses were approved for government funding, while under the VSL program, that number was reduced by 478 to 347. This move was to crack down on unscrupulous marketing activities and withdrawal fees, and to help ensure VET providers only enrol genuine students who are academically-suited to studying their course.
Under the VET VSL program, students also need to be satisfactorily progressing through their course to continue accessing FEE-HELP.
What are VET Student Loans?
VET Student Loans are income-contingent loans, where your repayments depend on your income.
If you’re eligible for a VET student loan, you’ll be able to pay for all or part of your VET tuition fees, depending on the cap rate for that course. The Australian Government will then pay the loan amount directly to the course provider, and you’ll only need to repay the loan once your repayment income is above the minimum threshold determined by the Australian Government each financial year.
