Why upskilling is important

Category: Career Development

There’s no doubt that in today’s competitive job market and corporate environment of cutbacks and redundancies, everyone in the workforce – from high school graduates to MDs – needs to upskill constantly to keep up with technological, economic and social changes.

Consultancy firm McKinsey predicts about 60% of jobs could see at least a third of their tasks automated, while Deloitte claims the half-life of learned skills is now around 5 years. That means what you learnt to get a degree or industry qualification years ago could already be out-of-date.

Recruitment firm Hays’ survey of over 2,000 people uncovered that 77% of employers are more likely to shortlist a candidate who has regularly upskilled.

So upskilling shouldn’t just be seen as a nice-to-have – it’s a necessity to keep up with the ever-changing demands in your chosen industry.

How do I upskill?

The first step to upskill is to find a training course that suits your individual needs and career goals.

Now more than ever, it’s become much easier to further your vocational education and upskill thanks to the prevalence of online courses.

Online courses mean you can study a training course with the same quality standard and academic weight of an on-campus course, but with the added benefit of being able to do so on your own terms – whenever and wherever it suits you.

With more and more people choosing to continue their studies while they’re in full-time employment, as well as with greater international career opportunities, online courses are the preferred method of upskilling for many people.

Benefits of upskilling

There are many benefits of upskilling – from personal development right through to achieving that promotion or higher salary you’ve been aiming for.

These are just some of the benefits of upskilling:

  • Greater career opportunities in higher-level positions
  • The ability to show a potential employer that you’re a self-disciplined and highly-motivated individual – putting you in a stronger position to secure the role you’re after
  • The opportunity to challenge your existing knowledge in an ever-changing industry, helping you to further both your personal and career development
  • Reduces the risk of falling behind the pack with your knowledge and skills and the risk of redundancy
  • Boost your creativity, capacity for learning and time-management skills as you learn new and more effective ways of doing your job and manage your studies alongside your work

If you want to stay ahead of the competition in today’s job market, and even in your current role, it’s important that you don’t get stuck in your comfort zone or stay stagnant – find a training course that’s right for you and upskill to ensure you’re in the best position possible to nab that next role or higher salary you’ve been looking for.
