3 things you should know about youth work courses

Certificate IV in Youth Work

Youth work is a challenging, yet immensely rewarding career choice. As a trained and qualified youth worker, you’ll have the ability to help shape the future lives of young people and empower them to become confident, independent and successful individuals in both their professional and personal lives.

If you’re interested in a career in youth work, here are 3 things you should know about youth work courses:

  1. You can study for a diploma of youth work online

If you’re looking to become a youth worker, but you want the flexibility to be able to study whenever and wherever it suits you, completing a diploma of youth work online is a great option.

Completing a diploma of youth work online allows you to gain the specialist skills and knowledge you need to become a successful youth worker, without needing to interrupt your work or other personal commitments or commit to on-campus studies.

  1. You can apply for VET Student Loans to help pay for your studies

If you meet the citizenship/residency requirements stipulated by the Australian Government and study an approved course (visit: https://www.education.gov.au/information-vet-student-loans-students for more information), you could be eligible for VET Student Loans (previously VET FEE HELP) to help fund your studies.

VET Student Loans replaced the VET FEE-HELP scheme on 1 January 2017, providing students with greater protection and career opportunities by focussing on courses that directly address industry needs (source: https://www.education.gov.au/vet-student-loans).

With a VET Student Loan, you can pay for an approved youth work course without needing to worry about having to pay tuition fees upfront from your own pocket. You’ll only pay back your student loan once your income is above the compulsory repayment threshold set each year by the Australian Government (see: https://docs.education.gov.au/system/files/doc/other/vet_student_loan_student_information_booklet_2017_0.pdf for more information).

TrainSmart Australia is a registered training organisation (RTO) that offers an online Diploma of Youth Work course that’s both nationally-recognised and VET Student Loan-approved.

  1. Once you’ve completed your CHC50413 Diploma of Youth Work, you can apply for a range of youth work jobs

With the Australian Government predicting “very strong” future growth for welfare support worker jobs over the next 5 years (source: joboutlook.gov.au), youth work opens up a wealth of career opportunities.

Once you’ve completed your CHC50413 Diploma of Youth Work with TrainSmart Australia, some of the jobs you’ll be able to apply for include:

  • Family support worker
  • Youth residential care worker
  • Juvenile justice officer
  • Youth counsellor
  • Case manager (youth)
  • Youth liaison officer
