The AE150 Operating a Small Business Skill Set is a government-funded Skill Set designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge in small-scale business. During this free 14-week course you’ll learn the fundamentals of running your own small business in various areas of day-to-day business operations. 

What will you learn in the Operating a Small Business Skill Set?

You will gain the skills and knowledge to be job ready in the small business industry. This training includes how to design and produce business documents and publications, how to design and develop digital text-based documents, how to develop and create spreadsheets through the use of cloud-based and non-cloud based applications, how to identify financial requirements of a business, including cash flow projections, profit targets and financial support strategies. You will also be taught how to understand and implement Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) legislation, policies and procedures, and how to create and build a social media presence.

How will you study the Operating a Small Business Skill Set?

In this online business course, you will learn by joining our online virtual classes and given assessments to complete in our online student portal. Weekly live online classes (via Zoom) are scheduled for Thursday from 9:30 am-12:30 pm where you’ll be guided through each unit by TrainSmart Australia’s team of Business and IT trainers.

Design and produce business documents

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to design and produce various business documents and publications. It includes selecting and using a range of functions on a variety of computer applications. It applies to individuals who possess fundamental skills in computer operations and keyboarding. They may exercise discretion and judgement using appropriate theoretical knowledge of document design and production to provide technical advice and support to a team.

Design and produce digital text documents

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to digitally design and develop text-based documents using advanced features of word processing applications/platforms. It applies to individuals who possess fundamental skills in digital device operation, and basic skills in operation of word processing applications. They may work as individuals who provide administrative support within an enterprise, or may be technical/knowledge experts responsible for production of their own digital documents.

Design and produce spreadsheets

BSBITU314

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop spreadsheets through the use of both cloud-based and non-cloud based spreadsheet applications. It applies to individuals employed in a range of environments who tend to be personally responsible for designing and working with spreadsheets under minimal supervision. These individuals are generally required to have intermediate knowledge and understanding of a number of spreadsheet applications.

Plan small business finances

BSBSMB402

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to identify financial requirements of a business, including profit targets, cash flow projections and strategies to garner financial support. It applies to individuals who operate a small business or work within an existing micro or small businesses and interpret financial data.

Apply knowledge of WHS laws in the workplace

BSBWHS307

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to understand work health and safety (WHS) laws, and comply with them in one’s own workplace. The unit applies to those who contribute to compliance with WHS laws as part of their WHS responsibilities, which are in addition to their main duties.

Use social media tools for collaboration and engagement

ICTWEB201

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to establish a social networking presence, using social media tools and applications. It includes the requirement to review, compare, and use different types of social networking tools and applications. It applies to information and communications technology (ICT) personnel who need to develop a social networking web presence for a small or large office environment, using social media tools and applications.

On completion of the AE 150 Operating a Small Business Skill Set, you will be awarded a Statement of Attainment for 6 units which will open up a pathway and provide credit transfers into the following qualifications;

  • Diploma of Business
  • Diploma of Business Administration

To be eligible for the Jobs and Skills WA – Skills Ready Government subsidy, you must reside in Western Australia and meet;

1. One of the eligibility criteria in Category 1, AND;
2. One of the eligibility criteria from Category 2;

Category 1

You are an Australian Citizen

You hold a sub-class 309, 444, 785, 790, 820, or 826 visa

You are a partner or dependant of a holder of a temporary Visa sub-class 457

You hold a Bridging Visa E (subclasses 050 and 051) with a valid application for a visa sub-class 785 or 790

Category 2
