As a make-up artistry student, it’s an incredible opportunity to get to be part of a major, world-renowned stage production like the critically-acclaimed musical We Will Rock You
. The backstage energy, the cast’s nervous excitement, the audience’s anticipation – it’s an experience that’s unrivalled for many aspiring make-up artists. And that’s exactly what our Diploma of Screen and Media students at TrainSmart Australia (TSA) got to experience when they worked as makeup artists for the cast of We Will Rock You
at Perth’s prestigious His Majesty’s Theatre recently.
Artistic make-up training in Perth
While there are a range of make-up artistry courses available through other make-up training providers in Perth, what really sets TSA apart is its close industry connections. It’s these connections that secured the opportunity for our students to be part of this once-in-a-lifetime experience. With a cast and crew of over 100, We Will Rock You
was the largest production that TrainSmart Australia’s TSA College of Creative Arts had been a part of. It provided students with not only an unforgettable experience, but also with the unique and invaluable opportunity to practice the make-up artistry skills they’d learnt during their studies in a major stage production setting.
The show goes on at Perth’s We Will Rock You We Will Rock You
is a musical written by Ben Elton, based on the songs made famous by British rock band, Queen. The production has received critical acclaim internationally, and has been performed around the globe – from London’s West End, to the US, Brazil, and Australia. The Perth production starred local celebrities including Courtney and Chris Murphy and Dean Misdale (aka ‘Feminem’), with national singing and songwriting legend Normie Rowe as special guest. On opening night, the writer behind the musical, Ben Elton, graced the cast with his surprise attendance. As is well-known in theatre circles, though, no production is without its fair share of backstage drama. During one night of the production, a lead character fell ill in the lead-up to the second act. This meant an understudy had to take over, warm up their vocals and get into costume, wigged and made up in less than 20 minutes! Our TSA students had to work under extreme pressure to apply the understudy’s make-up in just a few minutes – for a character that usually takes an hour to make-up – for the show to go on. But they stepped up to the mammoth task and approached the situation calmly and tactfully, as you’d expect from a team of professional make-up artists. And, thanks to their efforts, the show did go on! So, while other make-up training providers in Perth might offer make-up artistry courses that can teach you how to be a make-up artist, TrainSmart Australia offers our students the unique opportunity to learn makeup by working backstage in world-class stage productions like We Will Rock You
