…for a brighter future.

How to get motivated to study online

One of the greatest pitfalls people find themselves in when studying online is a lack of motivation. A lack of motivation can have a serious impact on your studies, leading you to fall way short of your academic potential, or even to fail your course completely.

It can be especially easy to find yourself in this pitfall if, for example, you’re trying to juggle your studies with a full-time job, family, and other personal commitments. In these cases, studies can quickly take a backseat to everything else.

But it can also be just as easy to get yourself out of this pitfall and get your motivation and studies back on track.

Here are some easy ways for you to get back your motivation as an online student:

Take a reality check

Remember, you chose to study your course for a reason – whether it was to help you land a new job, a promotion, or even just to learn something new. That specific motivation is exactly what you need to keep in mind when you find yourself facing an obstacle between you and your studies.

Whether it’s your turn to do the cooking, a boss breathing down your neck to work overtime for the second consecutive week, or a friend’s dinner party invite, you need to take a reality check, reflect on your motivation for studying, and simply know when to say “no”.

Master your time-management skills

Once you’ve mastered the self-discipline you need to know when to say “no” to distractions, you need to plan your time effectively so that you can fit in enough time for your studies alongside your other commitments.

At the start of each week, plan out how many hours you’ll need to dedicate to your studies that week to be able to go through the relevant course materials and work on any assessments. With that weekly number in mind, split it into manageable daily chunks and set up a time in your calendar each day – whether it be after work, first thing in the morning, or once the kids are asleep – to dedicate entirely to your studies. It might not seem like much, but even just setting up time in your calendar each day to focus on your studies will be a daily reminder to make sure your studies stay on-track.

Change your mindset

If you’re seeing your studies as simply something you have to do – just like a boring chore around the house – it’s time to change your mindset.

Sure, like everything else, studies can have its less inspiring moments at times. But, looking beyond those mainly trivial and short-lived moments, studying online offers a wealth of great benefits – from expanding your career opportunities, knowledge and skills, to keeping your mind active and engaged with the world around you.

So rather than seeing your studies as a boring chore, see them for what they are – a great investment in your career and personal development.
