What will you learn in the Diploma of Business (Operations)?

Job’s roles related to business operations require personnel to overlook and supervise multiple business functions. For operations managers and coordinators to be effective in this role, effective leadership and management skills are essential.  

Improving operational functions also requires maintaining healthy relationships with a range of stakeholders and departments. As a part of this course, you’ll learn effective communication and coaching strategies to manage teams. These methods will help develop critical thinking in employees as well as inspiring team members to work holistically towards operational goals.

During this course you’ll learn to:

  • Plan and implement budgets, financials plans and business resources
  • Plan and manage project scope controls

How will you study the Diploma of Business (Operations)?

This course is offered under the Trainer-Directed-Learning Model. Assessments are by way of written and practical activities via video conferencing. Full trainer/assessor support is available throughout your studies.

How long is the Diploma of Business (Operations)?

This qualification is over a 12-month period with the opportunity to extend if required.

entry Requirements

TrainSmart Australia will assess a student’s ‘academic suitability’ to ensure the student has the best chance of success. This is determined by either:

  • The student providing TrainSmart Australia with a copy of an Australian year 12 certificate of education; or,
  • The student providing TrainSmart Australia with a copy of a Certificate IV qualification (or above) that was delivered as a part of the AQF (Australian Qualification Framework) that can be verified by the issuing organisation or the USI (unique student identifier) transcript or,
  • The student completing the Core Skills Profile for Adults online assessment passing at or above Exit Level 3 in the Australian Core Skills Framework in both reading and numeracy.

You may be required to complete a Bridging Course if you do not meet the above academic suitability criteria or at the request of our career advisory team.

Manage personal and professional development

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to implement systems and process that support the personal and professional development of self and others. The unit applies to individuals working in a range of managerial positions who are accountable for the development and performance of others.

Develop administrative systems

BSBOPS503

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to plan for or review the requirements of administrative systems and procedures for implementing, monitoring and reviewing the system. The unit applies to individuals employed in a range of work environments in senior administrative roles.

Manage organisational customer service

BSBOPS505

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop strategies to manage organisational systems that ensure products and services are delivered and maintained to standards agreed by the organisation. The unit applies to individuals who supervise customer service provided by others within an organisation. At this level, individuals must exercise considerable discretion and judgement, using a range of problem solving and decision making strategies.

Lead communication in the workplace

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to lead communication in the workplace within any industry. This unit has a specific focus on the communication skills required for team leaders with responsibility for other workers.

Develop critical thinking in others

BSBCRT511

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop critical and creative thinking skills in others within a workplace context. The unit applies to individuals who are developing and coaching others, for whom critical thinking skills (including analysis, synthesis, and evaluation) are an important part of their job roles. This unit applies to individuals who are typically responsible for leading teams.

Manage budgets and financial plans

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to undertake financial management in an organisation or work area. It includes planning and implementing financial management approaches and supporting and evaluating effectiveness of financial management processes. The unit applies to managers in a wide range of organisations and sectors who have responsibility for the effective use of financial resources within work teams. They are responsible for ensuring that financial resources are managed in line with the financial objectives of the team and organisation.

Manage business resources

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to manage resources according to planned business strategies. It includes analysing resource requirements, developing resource plans, allocating resources, and reviewing and reporting on resource usage. The unit applies to individuals with a role in allocating and monitoring the use of physical and/or human resources to meet defined business objectives

Manage project scope

BSBPMG530

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to determine and manage project scope. It involves obtaining project authorisation, developing a scope management plan, and managing the application of project scope controls. The unit applies to individuals responsible for managing and leading a project in an organisation, business or as a consultant.

Develop workplace policies and procedures for sustainability

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop and implement workplace sustainability policies and to modify the policy to suit changed circumstances. The unit applies to individuals with managerial responsibilities who undertake work developing approaches to create, monitor and improve strategies and policies within workplaces. These individuals also engage with a range of relevant stakeholders and specialists. ‘Sustainability’ in this unit refers to a broad approach that focuses on the minimisation of an organisation’s social, economic and environmental impact, as well as proactive value creation in these areas.

Manage business risk

This unit describes skills and knowledge required to manage business risks in a range of contexts across an organisation or for a specific business unit or area in any industry setting. The unit applies to individuals who are working in positions of authority and who are approved to implement change across the organisation, business unit, program or project area. They may or may not have responsibility for directly supervising others.

Manage recruitment and onboarding

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to manage all aspects of recruitment and onboarding processes according to organisational policies and procedures. The unit applies to individuals who take responsibility for managing aspects of recruiting, selecting new staff and orientating those staff in their new positions. The individual may be directly involved in the recruitment processes themselves or coordinating the process.
